Third ConceptSummary: Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs,) have witnessed revolutionary changes since the passage of the 73rd constitution amendment act, 1992 Panchayats have a key role in economic development strengthening social justice and ensuring service delivery. The paper traces the evolution of PRIs in India, examines its contribution to rural development evaluates the performance and suggests measures to strengthen these Institutions for future endeavor. Though PRIs have made significant achievements, including giant strides in rural development they are yet achieve their full potential. Functioning of PRIs is found to be uneven across states in India providing ample scope for empowerments.
