Based on a qualitative study of a large village in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, which witnessed the gram panchayat installing closed-circuit television cameras in response to a sudden communal flare-up, the impact of CCTV surveillance and how people negotiate with intrusive technology is discussed. The research suggests a paradoxical situation as people valued a more secure environment, but it came at the cost of their freedom and individual agency. CCTV surveillance led to a reconfiguration of public spaces into the surveilled and the non-surveilled, leading to different norms being followed in these spaces.- Reproduced
