State electricity boards: An entourage for reforms

At the time of independence India’s installed power generation capacity was 1362 MW catering bare minimum needs of only few sections of the society. The Industrial Policy Resolution 1948 emphasised on the importance of power sector and included it in the controlled private sector category. Since then efforts were made to increase the power generation activities and to reach the electricity to all over the country. As the country slowly progressed towards achieving self reliance in food grain production, industrial manufacturing activities and domestic household connections, there has been a substantial growth in power generation which recorded more than 388 GW by the end of 2020. In the process the power sector went through consistent reviews, policy changes based on the recommendations of various committees. There were many initiatives taken to address the institutional, infrastructural, financial issues of performance of State Electricity Boards as they played a crucial role in distributing the electricity to the various categories of consumers.
