Human rights of Indian tribes: An assessment

Bihar Journal of Public AdministrationSummary: Tribal population in India remained the most vulnerable section in a class and caste ridden Indian society in both pre and post Independent India. Despite of several government’s welfare schemes their situation remained unchanged. Here human rights may be defined as those rights which one has precisely because of being a human being. The administrative policies pursued by colonial government and developmental policies adopted by Indian government in the wake of liberalization and globalization finally resulted in displacement and alienation of large chunk of tribal population. In the political sphere this alienation culminated in various sub- national movements. After sensing the deplorable conditions of tribal people, the government of India appointed various commissions -1) to inquire in to their unrest 2) to improve their socio-economic & political conditions. In fact, Tribal India is a tinder box. In this article we will try to explore the reasons behind the rampant violation of human rights of tribals even after more than 75years of independence and how it could be stopped. Unless wiser and humanistic policies are devised to establish true partnership with these people country’s inclusive growth cannot be achieved. – Reproduced
