Rapid urbanization has led to the proliferation of informal settlements, characterized by inadequate housing, limited access to basic services, and insecure tenure. An estimated 65 million people reside in slums across urban areas in India, facing multiple vulnerabilities and social issues. The government has implemented various initiatives to improve the situation, including housing programs like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and slum rehabilitation schemes. Efforts have also been made to enhance access to basic services, financial inclusion, skill development, and livelihood opportunities for the urban poor. However, challenges persist in implementing these policies effectively and reaching the most marginalized communities. The paper highlights the importance of comprehensive approaches that integrate affordable housing, basic amenities, livelihood opportunities, and social empowerment. It emphasizes the need for inclusive urban planning, community participation, and partnerships between government, civil society, and private stakeholders. Addressing the issues faced by the urban poor and informal settlements requires sustained efforts to ensure equitable development, tenure security, and improved quality of life. The findings contribute to the understanding of the status of urban poor in India and provide insights into inclusive policy interventions to promote their well-being. Reproduced
