India–China connections from a subaltern perspective

Economic and Political WeeklySummary: In recent decades, the majority of studies on the relations between India and China have tended to be strongly coloured by the perspective of geopolitical rivalry or enmity emanating from the 1962 border war and its aftermath. Before the 1962 war, it must be acknowledged that some serious research had been done both in China and India on the ancient civilisational linkages between the two regions, which mostly stressed the peaceful and friendly nature of the ties between them. Between these two vantage points of hostility and friendship, what has been obscured is the complexity of the relations between these vast neighbouring societies, their enduring nature through many vicissitudes, their close connection with wider regional and global developments, as well as the human perspective.- Reproduced
