The state of Kerala has a historical connection with the Persian Gulf. This connection has been beneficial for Kerala's economy in terms of remittances and investments that have flowed in from these migrants. However, there has been an increase in their return who lost jobs due to the nationalisation policies like. Nitaqat, in Saudi Arabia. Saudi encourages local employment by replacing immigrant workers. This study aims at investigating the socio-economic effects of return emigration due to nationalisation policy of Saudi Arabia using quantitative data from Malappuram district. The return emigrants have experienced a decline in their socio-economic status, particularly after the implementation of Nitaqat. Return emigration presents several negative effects on the individuals, households and society in general. Utilisation of their remittance are mostly for non-productive purposes like building houses, marrying off children etc. that has pushed the returned into an unsustainable socio-economic situation. Since the home economy cannot fully absorb the returned, many of them show tendency to re-emigrate, preferably to the countries where more favourable conditions exist. However, age and the level of education have significant effects on their re-migration intention. Since the situation is likely to aggravate in the future, there is a felt need of appropriate policies and programmes to address the issue.- Reproduced
