The federalism scholars often doubted the Indian Federal system due to its unitary features and provision for a strong centre. The single party dominance era till 1967 at centre and states also buttress this notion. However, with the end of single- party dominance in 1967, a new dawn fir Federalism in India arose. From 1989 onwards, the coalition government era changed the discourse of politics and federalism in India. The Previous centralised federal model smoothly shifted towards decentralised fiscal federal polity with new economic policies and other factors. This paper argues that the changing nature of the party system in India affects the nature of centre-state relations in India. There are speculations by many scholars and analysts that in the era of PM Narendra Modi since 2014, the centralisation tendencies of pre-coalition government are back again and pushing India towards Nationalist Federalism. At the same time, one may find counter arguments to prove that these speculations are exaggerated, and the federalisation process has been more strengthened during BJP dominant NDA regime. However, this debate underlines the growing need for a scholarly investigation to explore the contemporary developments of Federalism in India. This article tries to unearth and analyse the various aspects of centre-state relation that shape India's current contours of federal politics. - Reproduced
