The societal fabric of Assam in inherently plural and comprises of various ethnic, religious and linguistic communities. Consequently, it has been a hotbed for conflicts concerning group identities and distribution of resources. Identity politics in Assam is a multi- faceted issue which ranges from land ownership, citizenship, immigration to issues of self- determination and secession. Demand for recognition gains momentum among those communities who are historically stigmatised. This article argues that issues of identity politics is Assam can be connected, if not reduced, to the cultural disparities of the communities and the absence of both the policy and the spirit of multiculturalism. - Reproduced
