Economic & Political WeeklySummary: Salt pan workers face harsh socio-economic conditions that markedly increase their vulnerability to psychological distress, which in turn exacerbates their risk of developing common mental health disorders. Based on a survey of salt pan workers in Marakkanam, Tamil Nadu, it is found that 75.4% of the workers exhibited symptoms of CMDs. The findings highlighted a stark disparity in CMD prevalence among different groups within the community, with marginalised groups, such as women and Scheduled Castes, experiencing a much higher incidence of CMD. Reducing the debt repayment obligation decreased the prevalence of CMD symptoms.-Reproduced
