Economic & Political WeeklySummary: Trends in consumption inequality and poverty in India are examined using data from the Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys for 2011–12, 2022–23, and 2023–24. The analysis reveals a decline in overall consumption inequality across both rural and urban areas, which also coincides with periods of high real GDP growth. However, the decline in inequality is uneven across food and non-food groups. –Reproduced
