Indian Journal of Public AdministrationSummary: In a vast country like India, with a population of over one billion, having high demographic diversity and heterogeneity, and varying levels of socio-economic development among states, a common national population policy might not serve the purpose. An effective population stabilisation programme must be state-specific and address regional disparities, socio-cultural differentials and infrastructural problems. This article discusses the need for a state policy for Karnataka, within the broad framework of the National Population Policy of 2000, by evaluating the past performances and emphasising the existing regional disparities within the state. It also highlights the perspectives, framework and recommendations for a Population Policy for Karnataka. - Reproduced.
