Indian Journal of Public AdministrationSummary: The developmental Schemes for tribals have caused several disadvantages, mainly displacement and loss of land. Even the land alienation has kept these groups away from opportunity for education, health and employment. The tribals have become dependent on the wages, working as agricultural, mining or factory labourers. This article suggests that efforts should be made for tribal development in the very areas of their habitat by leaving local resources to the community. The strengthening of institutions of local self-government can keep the deprived sections cushioned from the operation of market forces. - Reproduced.
