Indian Journal of Public AdministrationSummary: The Independent India has been constantly endeavouring to bring efficiency, particularly in public service delivery through more accountability, transparency and responsiveness. However, this has remained no more than a theoretical exercise with little impact on service delivery to vulnerable sections which constitute about half of the population. In this backdrop, this article attempts to conceptualise the Public Service Excellence besides analysing the realities. It highlights the policy initiatives and interventions for fostering excellence in public service delivery. It makes out a case for empowering the community towards qualitative improvements in service delivery. - Reproduced.
