If the conduct of free and fair elections at periodic intervals is assumed to be the essence of the vibrancy of a successful democracy, the successful functioning of the electoral machinery must be construed to lie at the heart of the system. On such counts, the Election Commission of India has come out with flying colours. In this article an attempt is made to analyse the role of Election Commission in combating corruption and corrupt practices in elections. - Reproduced.
