<br/><br/> Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) has twin emphasis on employment generation and creation of durable assets. The article explores how far MGNREGS is able to address environmental issues in Bardhaman district of West Bengal. The study further shows it is capable of addressing local environmental problems, but actual decisions regarding types of schemes do not incorporate people's direct participation.  - Reproduced.
