The literature review aims to address this interdisciplinary and relatively less explored knowledge terrain by examining relevant concepts, definitions and normative relationship for QoL and built environment in cities, including different approaches, methods, tools, etc. employed in their evaluation. The scope of this research largely covers peer-reviewed published work spanning about hundred research papers and scientific studies, policy documents of national and state governments, reports published by international organisations, out of which 42 have been reported/cited in this article. The article brings to the forefront major research findings and their associated knowledge gaps into four important groups, namely conceptual/theoretical knowledge, methods and tools, empirical information and policy application. It concludes with substantial evidence that although there is considerable understanding and evolving theoretical discourse on QoL at the global, national and sub-national levels, there is still no single or universally accepted definition of QoL. - Reproduced. aKnowledge gaps aQuality of life aCities and towns - India aCities and towns aNagarlok
