<br/><br/> This article is based on the Fourth Radha Kamal Mukherjee Memorial Lecture, 1993. The author analysing various factors which had profound impact on agrarian evolution in the country, has revealed that the real transformation came about only after independence when planned attempts were made to improve the farming community.These measures include land reforms, large scale investment in irrigation, power and technology and creation of a favourable price climate for the growers
