China under Mao tightly controlled inter-regional migration through population registration and the rationing systems. Since the early 1980s the extent of migration has increased enormously, so that China's migrant labour market increasingly resembles that of other large Developing Countries. This article is a preliminary attempt to analyse this new phenomenon in post reform China. Reproduced
