Srinivasan, R.

Urban growth and local self-government in contonments in today's context. - 1995 - p.161-70 - Jan-Jun

"The paper presents an overview of evolution Cantonment Boards (CBs), their functions and administration over the years. As they do not come under the framework of Constitution (Seventy-fourth Amendment)Act, it has created an impression that the CBs can not exist constitutionally. There is also a feeling among certain quarters to abolish this "old victorian rubbish" and the "avoidable hangover of old colonial past". The paper suggests, however, to retain and strengthen them through proper land management and planned developments which could generate resources. The CBs have definitely offered sound surroundings and an environment which is congenial for healthy living in this age of deteriorating urban environment.
