Maintaining that housing forms a crucial part of the strategy for the alleviation of rural poverty, the author says that a lot more remains to be done to improve the housing facility for the poor. The present scenario calls for the formulation of a comprehensive housing policy. Among the measures suggested are a detailed survey to identify the needy, popularisation of cost-effective technologies, dependence on locally available materials, appropriate housing design and involvement of beneficiaries. - Reproduced
