The author traces origin of human rights thrust and emphases placed thereon by political thinkers to facilitate understanding of the concept vis-a-vis role of State. He then discusses various declarations/convention, etc., issued by international agencies to safeguard human rights globally, prescribing role of nation state in upholding there. He then critically discusses the Indian scenario in this regard and stresses the need for a transformative agenda to assess success/failure in moving towards good governance. - Reproduced
