<br/><br/> Providing background on the importance of higher education in India with the pattern of Plan allocations on different segments of education, the author analyses the trends of governmental financing of higher education. Then, picking up arguments from economic restructuring guidelines which impinge on higher education financing, he examines operationalisation of these guidelines to point out its impracticabilities. He concludes with a plea for raising social value of higher education which, according to him, will attract greater funding by the public. - Reproduced
