In its transition to modern representative democracy, the electoral agenda in Meghalaya is still largely determined by clan and kinship loyalties entrenched in majority tribal communities. As a result, besides various regional parties having a substantial presence in the electoral arena, even the national parties like the Congress and the BJP, have to fine tune their manifestos to suit regional aspirations. - Reproduced
