The process of realignment of social forces began in Bihar in the 1970s prompted by the aspirations of the middle caste groups for a share in political power. This process was most evident in the first half of 1990. However, `backwardism' may not be the nature of politics in Bihar in the future, with the assimilation of larger social groups. - Reproduced
