The role of Gram Sabha in village development

Gram Sabha, despite being envisaged as the foundation of the Panchayati Raj system and an effective role player in village development, is handicapped due to the lack of clarity of its role in village development vis-a-vis the gram panchayat. However, it has the potential to serve as the basic unit of village governance and could be the most effective forum for involving villagers in planning, implementing and monitoring village development programmes. - Reproduced
