<br/><br/> Regulatory instruments have been used for environment protection in many countries of the world.  Economic Regulatory Instruments have been less used, even though their advantage is known.  The momentum to use these economic regulatory instruments in OECD countries increased in the current decade and a large number of these have been implemented.  The experience gained in the OECD countries suggests a judicious mix of regulations with economic instruments for effective environment protection.  Four options for introducing economic instruments in India have been examined in this article.  These differ in the extent of govenment intervention.  According to the author the normative criterion for success of these instruments will include its political and public acceptability, economic efficiency, equity and distributional aspects, administrative costs and the adaptability to changing technology and environment. - Reproduced
