The vast increase in India's population in the last fifty years along with expansion in the irrigation-based agriculture and rapid industrialisation have put an unprecedented pressure on her natural resources. The natural course of rivers, not bound by the political boundaries of the provinces, has become a hot bed of conflicting interests, clamour and controversies. This article gives a comprehensive analysis of major riverine disputes, attempts at resolving these disputes, and social, economic and political issues related to this problem. - Reproduced
