Education is the basic necessity for the development of human reassures and socio-economic advancement in any region. An educated person is always more aware about his political rights and obligations. In 2010. Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections in Haryana, 30, 06 per cent elected members wee illiterate against 24.45 per cent general rate of illiteracy recorded by the state in 2011, suggesting that illiteracy was more pronounced among elected members of PRIs than the population of Haryana. It may be the major reason for government of Haryana to pass ‘Haryana Panchayati Raj Amendment bill, 2015. This study has been conducted to evaluate the impact of this amendment on the improvement of educational status of the PRIs and other related issues. Based on secondary data related to PRIs election of 2010 and 2016, the study reveals that an average educational status score, per elected member of PRIs increased from 33.08 per cent in 2010 to 41.85 per cent in 2016, suggesting positive impact of Haryana Panchayati Raj Amendment bill. Maximum improvement has been noticed in Mewat district of the state. Apart from enhanced educational status of PRIs, the study also reveals improvements in the participation of females, youths, scheduled castes (SC) and backward castes in the PRIs elections. The study also highlights the spatial patters of PRIs rate of illiteracy in 2010 and improvement in educational status of elected PRIs in 2016 elections, so that target areas may be identified for policy formulation. – Reproduced
