State market and economic-status related marginlisation in access to higher education n Punjab: Insights from recent NSS data

This paper based on recent, NSS data, examines the phenomena of extension and intensification of market mechanism in higher education sector in the state of Punjab triggered by the neo-liberal economic reform. The study established that not only the non-state education provides have become numerically predominate in delivery of higher education per se and higher professional education in particular in the state under this newfangled market-driven dispensation, there has also been seen a swing to market mechanism in the government-run institutions in form of introduction of self-financing course. The study further establishes that that the burden of higher education in such settings, in terms of household expenditure, is categorically colossal, leading to commodification of higher education in the state the implications of this unwarranted penetration of neo-liberal market mechanisms and consequential commodification of higher education is the inequality of opportunity in higher education in the state and the marginalisatin of the economically undervileged sections of the society from participation particularly in the higher professional education. - Reproduced
