Elements of good governance - 2001 - p.1-4 - Oct-Dec

At the dawn of independence, the great leaders and freedom fighters of our country had a vision ... a vision of a free country and a democratic government that would pave the pathway of development for its fellow countrymen with sincerity, dedication and accountability. But somewhere along the way, this vision disintegrated, leaving behind remnants of a disoriented government, lacking the capability of being responsive to the needs of the people and serving them with a sense of concern. In order to regain back the faith of the masses, the government is now trying to bring about a reform in its functioning through the process of `good governance'. The current article provides a kaleidoscopic view of the various meanings of the terms `governance' and `good governance'. The author, Gireesh Pradhan, IAS Director General, YASHADA, enlightens the reader regarding the core elements essential to build and support good governance. - Reproduced.
