The article provides a comparison between the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) to understand the reasons for the success of the former as compared to the near collapse of the latter. Chhotelal Kumar suggests some of the initiatives and reforms that SAFTA member states may undertake in order to revive SAFTA, given the substantial benefits that regional economic integration can bring to them. – Reproduced
