A review of studies on urban traffic congestion: Seeking urgent policy initiatives

<br/><br/> Abstract<br/>Fast pace of urbanisation and growing population are the major attributes of heavy<br/>traffic congestion . It is not a new phenomenon but technological advancement,<br/>particularly after second world war, it emerged as a formidable problem. At<br/>present, it does not only make the urban life troublesome, but it has become an<br/>environmental hazard. UNDESA (2020-21) reveals that by 2050 world will have<br/>68 percent urban population. Although India has merely 35.9 percent, yet the high<br/>density of population in urban areas poses threat of greater rush of traffic than that<br/>of cities of developed world. In view of this alarming situation, a comprehensive<br/>review of studies covering different factors and perspective like geography,<br/>economics, engineering, sociology and urban planning becomes pertinent. Thus,<br/>it has been ventured to review the studies on traffic congestion with a view to<br/>find ways to tackle the menace. The studies reveal that it is high time to go for<br/>appropriate legal provisions and policy initiatives that may improve the traffic<br/>conditions and local economy.<br/>Keywords: Urbanisation, Traffic-congestion, Urban Planning, Causes, Remedies,<br/>India
