Government policy for wellbeing of tribes in India: A review of the post 2014 period

Even after seven decades of self-rule and constitutional provisions in their favour, the Scheduled Tribes (STs) in India are still beyond the mainstream in terms of socio-economic status. However, in the period after 2014, Government of India took several measures to ameliorate them from miseries through schemes like VKY, PMVDY, EMRS, etc. These schemes and policy aim to expand the quality of life of STs by delivering them basic amenities, promoting entrepreneurship, providing quality education, and financial assistance, and promoting tribal culture and development. Now it is high time to assess the impact of these schemes on the life of tribes in India. With this view in mind, the present paper attempts to examine the improvement in the socio-economic development of tribes and challenges faced in implementation of these schemes. Based on secondary data, the present paper finds that there has been paradigmatic shift in policy and the policy has shown promising results, yet there is still a long way to go in addressing the challenges faced by STs, such as poverty, unawareness, marginalization, and discrimination among them. – Reproduced
