Predictive policing: Fighting crime with algorithms

<br/><br/>  Predictive policing is a process that involves the usage of algorithms to analyze massive set of information for the purpose of predicting and preventing potential crime commission in the future. Although, predictive policing is a process that facilitates crime detection but the process also involves apprehension of inherent biases which the algorithms may trigger after analyzing the historical data. Predictive policing can either be place based or person based which means, it can either identify crime prone areas or analyze persons likely to commit crimes. Some of the police departments are on their way to using this technology as a tool for police administration but the concerns for transparency always engulf this domain. The transparency question involves a major issue of audit of these records, as to who access these predictions and for what purposes. In India, the concept is not new as the predictive policing has already been put in place in many States like Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana and Jharkhand. The massive project of installation of camera for police surveillance are basically accumulating data for purpose of predictive policing as well. Thus the present paper makes a modest attempt to explain the concept, benefits and drawbacks of this technology and also emphasize on the transparent involvement of this technology in the police administration process by validating its use by quoting its progress in other jurisdictions.- Reproduced <br/><br/>http://www.iipabiharbranch.org/<br/>
