Recognising cohabitation relationships: The need for legislative framework

<br/><br/> As societal norms continue to evolve, live-in relationships have gained acceptance among certain sections of Indian society, particularly in urban areas. While offering autonomy and flexibility to couples, these relationships also raise questions about legal recognition, inheritance rights, and social security. The judiciary has played a key role in addressing disputes related to live-in relationships, interpreting laws in a way that offers some protection to partners, especially women. However, the absence of a comprehensive legal framework leaves several ambiguities regarding property rights, domestic violence protections, and custody matters in cases where children are involved. Cultural attitudes towards live-in relationships remain divided, with traditional perspectives often clashing with modern ideals of personal freedom and choice.
