Economic growth and women’s empowerment: A repeated cross-sectional study from India

<br/><br/> This study examines the relationship between women’s empowerment and economic growth, utilising data from the National Family Health Surveys spanning from 2006 to 2021. Our findings reveal: (i) a positive influence on economic empowerment but a more subdued, if not negative, effect on women’s agency; (ii) significant but minor associations of state gross domestic product with all women’s empowerment indicators; (iii) economic empowerment factors such as bank account ownership and employment demonstrate the highest responsiveness to gross domestic product.
