India’s mission mode approach against sickle cell disease - Yojana: A Development Monthly - 68(12), Dec, 2024: p.34-40

According to the world health organization (WHO), more than 40 crore people are the carriers of trait gens for hemoglobin disorders, mainly sickle cell disease and thalassemia and every years, over 3 lakh babies are born with server hemoglobin disorder. While normal red blood cells can live up to 120 days, sickle cells can only live for about 30 to 40 days. The suckled cells obstruct the blood flow, leading to blood clots and narrowing of the blood vessel channel that causes filature of blood supply to the spleen, brain, and kidney that may result in infections, stokes, and organ damage affecting every organ in the body. The global Burden of disease (GBD) study in 2021 estimated that approximately 12 lakh people in India are affected by sickle cell disease (SCD), SCD is particularly tribes. The national sickle cell anemia elimination mission (NSCEM) under the national health mission was launched in 2023 with the goal to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047. The mission’s objective is to provide affordable, accessible, and quality crew to all SCD partings and reduce the prevalence of SCD. – Reproduced
