India’s 2024 general election: Continuity and change - Economic & Political Weekly - 59(48), Nov 30, 2024: p.35-44

The parliamentary election of 2024 achieved the unusual distinction of delivering both continuity and change. With a majority of seats in the Lok Sabha, the National Democratic Alliance coalition formed the government and continued with its policies and personnel pretty much intact. However, the failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party to win a single-party majority on its own, and a significantly larger number of seats for INDIA which elevated it to a credible parliamentary opposition, have had the combined effect of restoring the parliamentary process and changing the political atmosphere in the country as a whole. These results have been achieved more through a tactical alliance within the INDIA bloc than any significant shift in the social base of the two coalitions. This makes 2024 a “maintaining” rather than a critical election. – Reproduced
