Tracing the evolution of Ambedkar’s life and ideas in their context - Economic & Political Weekly - 59(50), Dec 14, 2024: p.26-28

Existing biographies of B R Ambedkar encompass many different genres, but Ashok Gopal’s work stands out, as he brings every major event in Ambedkar’s life to the fore. The book is a comprehensive historical account of Ambedkar’s life and ideas. Gopal attempts to document the evolution of Ambedkar’s thoughts and the changes in his ideas during his lifetime. To serve this purpose, Gopal provides both the context of Ambedkar’s personal life as well as a description of the political climate at different stages of his life. Despite the absence of a central argument, the chronologically contextualised book is of interest, particularly due to the multiple levels of information provided by the author for each significant event in Ambedkar’s life. Additionally, the book provides information beyond Ambedkar’s life and ideas, making it a valuable resource for understanding early 20th-century Indian political history.- Reproduced
