Globally, there has been a huge upsurge in enrollment in higher education. The byline in The Economist further stated: ‘Too little is known about whether it is worth it.’ Simon Marginson and his colleagues attempt to answer this predicament in their book Assessing the Contributions of Higher Education. Educators expect higher education institutions to develop individuals with holistic personalities; students and their parents are concerned about employment and earnings; governments focus on higher education’s contribution to economic growth and development, the employability of graduates and economic returns that the individuals and society get; community looks at universities for their contribution to community development; and the society as a whole expects higher education to produce responsible citizens, thinkers, philosophers, artists, statesmen, visionaries, and high-quality human capital.
