Breaking free from geographical isolation: India’s eastward inclination and the North East
- Economic & Political Weekly
- 60(15), Apr 12, 2025: p.23-26
Following its post-independence geographical isolation due to the partition, connectivity disruption pushed India’s once-prosperous North East into a prolonged development deficit. The “Look East” and “Act East” policies aimed to address this by connecting the region to East and Southeast Asia. These policies are explored and, in view of political uncertainties in neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh, alternatives to overcome the region’s developmental drags are discussed.- Reproduced
