Framing the cage, caging the frame: Rethinking Sheikh Abdullah
- Economic & Political Weekly

Sheikh Abdullah (1905–82) has remained central to the politics of Kashmir in the 20th century and continues to inform public discourse in the region and beyond. Yet only recently has he drawn the attention of academicians. Chitralekha Zutshi’s bio-graphy, Sheikh Abdullah: The Caged Lion of Kashmir, makes an important intervention in this regard. The biography is part of the Ramchandra Guha-edited “Indian Lives Series,” which seeks to illuminate the lives of “many extraordinary individuals” in the history of the “modern nation,” ancient and modern. It has a rich archival foundation, with new sources emerging particularly from private collections and archives in the United Kingdom. Curiously, the State Archives (Srinagar and Jammu) do not feature prominently in the work.- Reproduced
