The United Nations has included empowerment of women as one of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goal 5 states " Achieve gender equality and empower all women all girls." The patriarchal system prevalent in India has lead to the tradition of entrusting women with domestic responsibility. This tradition coupled with the associated social stigma has an influence on the extent of social freedom of women in comparison with their male counterparts. The women's self Help Groups are established to help women members' achieve socio- economic empowerment. The present study explores the role of SHGs in promoting social freedom among women in Kodagu district of Karnataka. - Reproduced
