<br/><br/> Ritual has been extensively theorised across social science disciplines, with sacredness often seen as its defining feature. This perspective has reinforced the notion of ritual as static and conservative, making it easy for authoritative institutions to manipulate. However, a different view recognises the potential of ritual for change and transformation, particularly in political contexts and protest movements. The concept of ritual politics articulates this creativity, making visible the unseen cultural symbols and religious spirits that still deeply occupy the minds of the people and their politics.
