Burial mounds as a world heritage site: Charaideo’s Moidams

The moidams of Charaideo, the royal burial mounds of the Ahom dynasty (13th–19th centuries), represent a distinctive funerary tradition in Assam. On 26 July 2024, UNESCO recognised the moidams at Charaideo as North East India’s first cultural World Heritage Site. The article traces their historical journey, architectural and cultural symbolism, and recent global recognition, highlighting the multifaceted significance of the Charaideo moidams. - Reproduced
