Sustainable leadership: An Indian perspective

In this age, it is becoming very difficult to make a harmony between Economy and Ecology. We have a challenge to provide a basic decent life to billions of people on the cost of this planet. This planet is facing two completely opposite circumstances. On one hand, we have pulled billions of people above poverty line with the help of technology, life expectancy has doubled to reach 70 today, Child Mortality has fallen from 18% to 3% within 50 years and extreme poverty has dropped from 55% in 1950 to less than 10% today. On the other hand, billions of people are facing severe diseases born of polluted water, air and food. Data of World Economic Forum suggests that oceans will have more quantity of plastic waste than number of fisheries by 2050. The 80% of energy needs of the globe is being fulfilled by fossil fuels. To tackle such contradictory situations, we need sustainable leaders who can work for healthy environment, vibrant economy and equitable society. This review paper is an attempt to present various aspects of sustainable leadership and methods of developing sustainability among leaders of an organisation. The present paper includes references not only from the modern literature but also from the ancient Indian scriptures of our Bharatiya Sanskriti. Reproduced
