    <subfield code="a">Movement is intrinsic to human life, and our intent in this special issue is to examine some of the underlying and compelling factors that are critical to processes of migration and mobility. Migration could be fixed or temporary, within India or globally and across different periods of time and space. People are not territorially fixed or sedentary beings; they move, for seasonal work, for education, for long-term employment opportunities, for tourism or retirement. Studies have also examined violence, conflict and war that inevitably entail movement for affected populations, resulting in migration. The outbreak of war in Europe has resulted in a spurt of movement from Ukraine to other parts of the Western world. Within India, COVID-19 compelled migrant labour to move back to their homes in different regions without the availability of public transport, often walking long distances. Increasingly, development goals and practices, as well as conflict in different parts of the country and globally, have resulted in the displacement of people and forced migration.
