Food subsidy in India has increased substantially over the years amid the rising concerns of farmers regarding the viability of farming. This article analyses the share of farmers in the food subsidy and the benefits derived by farmers as net buyers or consumers from the present system. Most of the benefits of the current system of minimum support prices, procurement, and public distribution accrue to the consumers, although farmers can derive some benefits as net buyers. – Reproduced
