Like much of South Asia, intergenerational transactions around care, economic security and affect are socially desired in India. Building upon this, we question these normatively “happy” transitions, especially into grandparenthood to move beyond the normative entrapments of family scripts and cultural morality around caregiving. Drawing from Bandura’s (2006) conceptualisation of self-efficacy and utilising the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India, we ask if grandparenting is emotionally fulfilling in later life for older Indians. Preliminary results from multivariate OLS models suggest grandparenting, being ambivalent at best, is mediated by the presence of extra-familial social networks, social participation, and health.-Reproduced
